Matooro Academy Launch Event

Supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Consulate General of Italy in London, the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK and FIPE (Italian Federation of Public Exercises), Matooro Academy is ready to open its doors to young Italians who wish to work in the UK hospitality field.

For six months, students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of both the “back house” and “front house” tasks, with a focus on the basics of hotels structure in the first three months, and a focus on managerial and administrative aspects in the second part of the course.

Thanks to the evening service that will take place in one of the affiliated restaurants, students will also have the opportunity to put into practice what they have learnt during the day, working alongside professionals for an average of 40 hours per week.

The maximum age to participate is 39, the same age Roberto Costa (the founder) was, when he arrived in London and changed his professional life, learning that management is as important as practice.

Roberto Costa, Founder of Matooro Academy, stated:
“The word entrepreneur defines a man who wants to do business and a business is made up of people. Creating an Academy for young people is a must for an Entrepreneur, giving to others what one has received professionally is a “must” that cannot be dealt with superficiality.
For this reason I present “Matooro”, the new Academy aimed at training anyone who wants to work in hospitality, thanks to the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK and FIPE, I am proud to present this new reality, and I am aware that I have a great responsibility towards the institutions.”

Marco Villani, Consul General of Italy in London, stated:
“Thanks to the integrated promotion program of Made in Italy developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was possible to finance this innovative and unique project that integrates professional training and promotion of Italian products abroad.”

Alessandro Belluzzo, President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK, stated:
“Matooro Academy is a beautiful example of the promotion of Made in Italy in the United Kingdom, a Made in Italy intended both as a new human capital and the promotion of Italian products. The Italian Chamber of Commerce in the United Kingdom is thrilled to support such an ambitious project which will benefit the Italian restaurants in the UK.”

The Course Programme

During the six-month course, various topics will be addressed aimed at providing a complete preparation for students to enter in the world of hospitality: the managerial program, focused on the management of the back office and the 40-hour of practice in the restaurants, will be accompanied by an English language course lasting six months aimed at taking students at level B1, which is mandatory for obtaining a British work visa. At the end of the six-month course, students will be ready to start working in hospitality and will have the opportunity to be introduced to more than a thousand London restaurants.

The Teachers

Roberto Costa was born in Genoa. Raised in the family trattoria, Roberto opened several successful restaurants in Italy before moving to London, where he opened the now famous RC Macellaio in South Kensington in 2012, which was also awarded the Tre Gamberi from Gambero Rosso. Today Macellaio RC has five other locations in London (Exmouth Market, Union Street, Fitzrovia, Battersea and Soho) and one in Italy (Milan). Roberto Costa soon became an important point of reference for many Italians who move to the United Kingdom, also thanks to his position on the Board of Directors of the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK since 2016.

Thanks to his passion for food and his knowledge of hospitality, in 2017 he was appointed Gourmet Ambassador and also awarded as the first Genoese ambassador in the world. With the aim of sharing the knowledge acquired over the years with young people to train them and motivate them to work in the beautiful world of hospitality, in 2018 Roberto founded RC Academy, one of his largest projects related to education in the hospitality sector, with which he has already trained more than 200 students.

Roberto will be accompanied by great professionals who will teach during the course, such as Michael Palij, one of the 380 Master of Wine in the world and founder of the first Oxford wine school called Winematters; Virgilio Gennaro, currently Wine Director at Giorgio Locatelli Consultancy and Business Development Manager at Berkman Wine Cellars, and special guests such as Alessandro Belluzzo, President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the UK and founding partner of Belluzzo International Partners and Trust & Wealth, and Muhammad Asif, an official member of the Forbes Business Council and partner at MCA International, who will share their work experience with students.
